Cultural Interest Groups

Join the SUA community, make new friends, learn and have fun!

Book Club

The SUA online Book Club brings members across the country together and there are several regulars! We meet quarterly to read and discuss books to help us better understand our Slovenian heritage as it pertains to the main Slovenian immigration periods to the U.S. and elsewhere. We also read books that explain what was happening in the homeland or nearby countries in these same time periods.

Culture, History and Current Events

The Slovenian Union of America (SUA) launched a new Cultural Interest Group (CIG) “Slovenia: History, Politics, Current Events,” in June 2025. Open exclusively to SUA members, the quarterly meetings via Zoom, will be co- chaired by SUA-member brothers Dr. Michael Kozuh, professor at Auburn University, and Daniel Kozuh, writer, editor, and media professional.

Craft Collective

The Craft Collective is meant to be a place for SUA members who are also crafters to join together for fun, fellowship, and learning. We want this group to be a space to learn from each other while exploring Slovenian craft traditions.

Slovenia on Screen

The Cultural Interest Group, “Slovenia on Screen,” chaired by SUA member Daniel Kozuh, is dedicated to exploring the cinematic heritage of Slovenia, tracing its development from the earliest films to contemporary works. Through a focus on films by Slovene directors and production houses, the group will examine how Slovenian Identity, history, and cultural values are represented, challenged, and shaped through cinema.

Citizenship and Language

This CIG has been paused for restructuring and future program planning.

Cultural Interest Groups (CIGs) provide another way to connect our SUA members. Members are already connected through SUA branches, but CIGs provide an opportunity for SUA members across the world (beyond branch boundaries) to connect based on common cultural interests and activities rather than where they presently live or have a branch connection. CIGs almost always meet virtually (on Zoom or another platform), and meetings are monthly or quarterly usually.

There are currently four active CIGs, the SUA Book Group, the SUA Craft Collective, Slovenian Culture, History and Current Events, and Slovenia on Screen. Other groups are in the process of forming, e.g. a Travel CIG and a Slovenian Cooking and Wine CIG. If you would like to join an existing CIG, explore CIG information or possibly start one email sua@slovenianunion.org.
